…Cultivate the Gold
Reflection from one year ago:
Someone close to me is beginning a new relationship. Well, old and new all at the same time. This couple has known each other for years and dated in their earlier teenage years. The timing was never quite right but maybe now with maturity, compassion and a willingness to grow together, something romantic could be brewing. I was told before others because there is some history that’s complicated and he didn’t want me to make assumptions or be taken by surprise. I wasn’t surprised, only cautious and logical, but also quite happy for both of them – in whatever they choose to be to each other.
The reaction to the news was taken a bit different by another – instead of wishing them the best, gave him a curse instead. I remembered the sentiment that you really don’t know someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. We don’t know how people were treated or choices they were forced to make or why, or all the chaos that can fill one’s mind or heart. So certainly we need to respect what we do know and be watchful, but more importantly, we need to build on the good we do know. There is good in everyone and that is what we must focus on and foster. It is very easy to place labels based on careless and ignorant whispers, but when we put in the effort to truly see someone, perhaps we will find a piece of gold. I’m certain that if their heart is genuine they will benefit from receiving this grace and the treasure within them will inevitably shine like gold and reflect back its beauty. We all deserve that chance.
